Mechanical and Production Engineering

The division of Mechanical and Production Engineering produces graduates that are highly skilled and competent in technical education. The division is composed of two departments that are instrumental in teaching and learning, community service and research. The division focuses on teaching modern and appropriate technology that helps students contribute to the development of industry, community and national development. The division works closely with industry and the community to enhance the technical skills and entrepreneurship skills of students. It offers the following courses in both full-time and part-time from National Certificate to Higher National Diploma. The division has a staff establishment of 26 lecturers and 14 non-Academic Staff.

Head of Division's profile

PrEng. Malven Takaidza is the Head of the Division of Mechanical and Production Engineering. He holds a Master of Technology in Machine Design, B-Tech in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, HND Mechanical Engineering, ND Plant Engineering, Further Education Trainers’ Certificate and a Class 1 Fitter Machinist.  Eng Takaidza HOD Mechanical Eng. Takaidza is a member of the Harare Polytechnic Board of Studies, the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) and the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ). He is also a member of the National Manpower Advisory Council (NAMACO), a registered National Trade Testing Officer and the Anglican Diocese of Harare Board of Governors. He has more than 19 years of combined industrial and lecturing experience. He worked for Willowvale Mazda Motor Industries for more than 10 years responsible for both production and maintenance before joining Harare Polytechnic in 2013. Eng. Takaidza has a passion for research, technical education and innovation. His areas of research interest are machine design, mechatronics and automotive engineering.

 

Paper Presentations

  1. Authored and presented a paper entitled: Tertiary education for sustainable development; a case of Harare Polytechnic (August 2022 ATUPA annual international conference) that was held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
  2. Core-authored and Presented a paper entitled: Reverse engineering as a tool for industrialization in Zimbabwe (ZIE 9th Biennial Congress) in 2018 in Victoria Falls.

Future Plans

The division strives to be the provider of engineering solutions to the society and the nation at large through research and innovation that will lead to creation of technology.  We also endeavour to form partnerships that will lead to expansion and decentralisation of TVET education there by providing life skills to the youth of Zimbabwe. l opportunities for both female and male students through gender mainstreaming. Income Generation

The division is engaged in various income generation projects that are both internal and external. This has in a way benefited both institution and the members of staff as they get extra money to cushion them from the economic hardships. Some of the external projects include:
1. Nyadire Teachers College guest house steel roof fabrication and installation
2. Bindura University of Science Education workshop roof installation

Research

The division is involved in various research initiatives that has seen it coming up with foot operated sanitising stands during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.        

Skills Development Program

The Skills Development Program is a 4-year-study program for students with a minimum of one O’ level. The program imparts hands-on skills that prepare for trade testing. The course is competence-based and emphasizes the acquisition of critical skills in Mechanical and Production Engineering. Students are recruited each term and spend a term at the Polytechnic and one year on OJET repeatedly for four years. After the fourth year, students qualify for Class One Journeyman trade testing. This program covers all six courses offered under the full-time programs at NC level.

Public-Private Partnerships

The division is ready to work with stake holders from other institutions and industry to PPPs. This would enhance the training program as PPPs will bring about exchange programs and technology transfer as outlined in the NDS1.
