Welcome to the   Applied Arts department where we pride ourselves in training industry sought-after artists in industrial clothing, cosmetology and designing. Our department is popular for producing hands-on students with exceptional skills in clothes designing, beauticians and hairdressers. The department has a staff complement of 22 energetic and qualified members who are ready to transform prospective students’ dreams into reality.
The department of Applied Arts trains technologists and beauticians in clothing, beauty and hairdo.  Students are taught technopreneurial skills which enable them to establish their business entities. Courses are offered both full-time and part-time, from national certificates to higher national diplomas. The Applied Arts Department commenced its activities in the early 1990s, with the then department being called Adult Education offering courses in Clothing Technology and other short courses. In 1996 the Minster of Higher and Tertiary Education expanded the department to include Cosmetology, Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing.

Head Of Department's Profile

Mrs. Mahobele is an expert in the clothing design industry and has over 20 years of experience in clothing and apparel. She holds a Masters degree in Clothing and Textiles, Honours Degree in Arts and Design from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). She passionate about designing and leads a team of equally enthusiastic lecturers who led the designing and production of PPEs for different government departments and other private entities at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The department has a staff complement of 22 energetic and qualified members who are ready to transform prospective students’ dreams into reality.

Future Plans

The department has plans to improve on income generation projects through establish a viable Hair and Beauty Salon. Furthermore, the department to produce Harare Polytechnic Regalia inline with Heritage Based Education to engage all students such that no one is left behind. More over there are plans to establish a state of the art wet laundry facility at the institution.

Income Generation

The department is involved in income generation projects such as production of goods and services. Produced PPEs for various government institutions and private institutions.

Research

Currently lecturers in the department are working on developing modules for the various courses offered.

Awards

Staff members in the department are working hard to upgrade themselves. 3 members of staff completed their undergrad and postgrad qualifications relevant to area of specialization.

Public-Private Partnerships

The department is making in-roads to establish Public-Private Partnerships.
